I am particularly interested in the qualities of light and their effects on the landscape. I have no particular allegiance to any media. I work in whatever seems appropriate to what I want to say. The works here are mainly acrylics, pastels and watercolour. I often mix media to produce a specific effect. My work starts with the figurative, but I do not want to be constrained by pictorial reality. I make many drawings working towards a final statement. These range from tentative scribbles to detailed drawings. Each drawing distils some visual element or intuitive response from the starting point. Most of the pieces shown here were developed in the studio from such drawings. I visit Wales and the Derbyshire Peak District for inspiration. Finding the pattern and structural qualities of the landscape are as important at depicting what I observe. I am particularly fascinated by the problems of recession and perspective.
