I work in oils - preferring their depth of colour, smell and general forgiving nature - applied to primed boards or canvas on board. The paint is applied in numerous thin layers, allowing each to dry before applying the next, enabling me to achieve a depth of colour not otherwise possible. This process seems wholly appropriate in that is echoes the layers of history and human activity that make up the landscape. My work explores the patterns and marks found on the land - a product of both the physical formation of the underlying rocks and the evidence of previous (and current) peoples. I think of my paintings as being after, rather than from nature - between the real and the imagined - and seek to get under the skin of the landscape in an effort to make visible those things that are unseen but nevertheless felt, not only connecting with the past but also with the present and the future.
