Alf Friend is a self-taught artist and sculptor working in different
mediums and materials. His travels in the Far East and Japan have led
to an interest in Zen philosophy, painting and particularly Japanese
art and design.
Alf Friend calls his present work the Yohaku series. Yohaku is a Japanese
word meaning white space and is the Japanese way of achieving balance
by pairing incompatible objects.
White space provides a background that emphasises whatever it surrounds
and will focus the observers attention. By combining painting and sculpture
Alf Friend creates these wall hanging assemblages. The materials used
are varied including wood, metal, string and plaster and the paints are
acrylics.
He has exhibited mainly in the South of England.
